WHOLE 9 YARNS: Jen Lucas Designs

We don’t always have the opportunity to meet the designers we feature in our PostStitch subscriptions, so you can imagine our excitement when we ran into Jen Lucas of Jen Lucas Designs at The National NeedleArts Association’s (TNNA) summer show in Columbus, Ohio. And… how often is it that you can convince the designer of the shawl you’re knitting to hold your yarn while you knit a few rows?!

That’s us – knitting away at Bandwagon, the featured shawl in our June 2017 BigStitch and BigStitch Lite subscriptions. After showing Jen some of the pictures of our subscriber knit Bandwagons, she took us on a tour of her designs:

Aranthera Shawl by Jen Lucas

The accomplished shawl designer has a penchant for cool stitch patterns that she applies to different shaped, wearable accessories. Her knits have been published in several industry magazines, and she’s published several of her own books, including one we wish could put in every subscription kit: Cozy Stash-Busting Knits.

We left inspired to cast on a new shawl, but figured we needed to finish Bandwagon, first! So while you’re knitting yours, and we’re knitting ours, get to know Jen a little bit more in our Whole 9 Yarns Q +A:

How long have you been knitting? I’ve been knitting for 13 years.

Who taught you how to knit? I taught myself to knit out of a booklet that came from a big box craft store.

What is currently on your needles? A shawl for my next book!

Where is the strangest place you have ever knitted? It’s not that strange, but probably a baseball game. It definitely drew a lot of attention!

Where is your favorite place to knit? At home, on the couch, watching Netflix!

What is your favorite thing in your notions bag? Tape measure – as a designer I can’t live without it!

What do you do when you’re not knitting? I like to read or do counted cross stitch.

What is on your knitting bucket list? I’d love to knit a Fair Isle cardigan with steeks! It seems like a fun challenge.

Who is your favorite knitting buddy? I have many – I have a knit & crochet group I’ve been meeting with for about ten years. They are all my favorite!
