While not explicitly written on this month’s subscription content cards, there was a whole lot of thoughtfulness included in each of our May subscriptions. From the yarn to the brand new patterns to the notions, May’s kits were a collective labor of love.
Setting the tone for the month was yarn from Crave Yarn; one skein of Linea for the BigStitch subscriptions, and one skein of never-been-knit-with-before Caravan for the SockStitchers. Each skein, dyed uniformly in its own muted brilliance, has a lightweight and soft first impression, but behind the ‘I want to smoosh it all over my face’ facade, is a strong, confident fiber ready to take on any project. This delicate steadfastness paved the way for two brand new patterns that debuted in both our BigStitch and SockStitch subscriptions.
BigStitch + BigStitch Lite
When Crave Yarn’s Amor Esperanza asked if she could design a pattern for our BigStitchers, we couldn’t say “yes” fast enough. Her methodical care and love for her yarn spills over into her pattern design, and, plus, who better to manipulate Crave Yarn into something beautiful than the one who knows it best?
Settling on her Linea base – 390 yards of fingering weight in a 90% superwash/10% cashmere blend fiber – she went to work creating the Ama Scarf, a one-skein masterpiece that pays homage to the Ama, Japanese female free divers who cultivate pearls. The pattern’s cool Gather 9 stitch created a repetitive column of rounded grouping of stitches, that when paired with the yarn’s subtle shine and sleek stitch definition, resemble the pearls the Ama bravely uncover.
We couldn’t send out this pearl themed project without one of our favorite stitch markers – a no-snag pearl marker from Heidi & Lana. It’s always a treasured accessory in our notions bag and it became a most perfect compliment to this project. Both BigStitch and BigStitch Lite subscriptions also received: a set of 3 bamboo cable needles to knit the Gather 9 stitch, and a miniSOAK packet from Soak Wash.
BigStitch subscribers received a Yarn Cube from Goodwater & Co to help tote your yarn while on the go (remember when we said that this project kit was a labor of love? One of our subscribers made these yarn totes for us!), and a pair of 9″ US 5 bamboo needles from ChiaoGoo.
When we saw Amor’s Ama Scarf swatch we were inspired to make a companion sock. We collaborated with her on perfecting the Gather 9 stitch and incorporated it into the cuff of a top down ankle sock. After having done some research on Ama, we decided to call it the Isan sock, which is Japanese for “heritage.” You see, the Ama pass down their “trade” from mother to daughter, much like knitting. And much like the Gather 9 stitch was passed down from the Ama Scarf to the Isan Sock, and from us to you.
To knit this sock Crave Yarn entrusted us with their brand new, never-been-knit-with-before Caravan, a fingering weight yarn poised to become a favorite, go-to sock yarn. This 70% Superwash Fine Merino, 10% Cashmere, 10% Camel and 10% Mulberry Silk blend, is smooth and silky, and as one subscriber pointed out, “just glides over my needles.” We couldn’t agree more.
SockStitchers also received a pearl marker from Heidi + Lana and a set of 3 cable needles.
